CHAPTER 8

In the morning he was at the door again, this time with coffee and huge cranberry muffins. Smiling down into her eyes, he told her to drink up.

“We have to be out of here in half an hour or we’ll miss our take-off time.”

He would say no more, only chuckle softly at some specially planned surprise. Lydia, shaking the sand out of her shoes from the day before, and climbing into fresh clothes, was trying to get her bearings. Her head was still full of sun and fun but she had just had another anxious call from Jason demanding a progress update. Lydia didn’t want to tell him she had spent the day flying kites, eating clams—and kissing their research subject.

“Um...I still can’t find out about the enhancer. He’s a...stubborn one.”

Truth to tell, she had totally forgotten to ask yesterday. Not at all like the professional Lydia she knew.

“Well, keep at him,” Jason begged, all the worry for the company in his voice. “We can’t leave one drop of that stuff on the loose.”

With a crisp new outfit, her makeup, which she luckily had in her purse, carefully on and her hair restored to chicness, Lydia felt more like her normal self. She meant to buttonhole Damone about the enhancer as soon as she could. She really did. But Damone was in no state to be grilled that morning. He was bubbling over with excitement and got going in the car as soon as he was able to hustle Lydia into the front seat.

With no GPS in the stately vehicle, Damone was consulting a real paper map that lead him along several twisting roads until they came to an open field high in the hills.

Lydia let out of a cry of surprise. Damone never ceased to amaze her. Enormous hot air balloons were dotted about all over the field. Some were lying flat and being slowly inflated. A couple were inflated and tethered to the ground. In the distance, a blue and white balloon was floating slowly up into the sky.

A leathery older woman detached herself from one of the half-inflated balloons and trotted over to greet Damone and Lydia.

“You two must be my passengers. I’m your pilot. Shooter. We’ll get going right away.”

A wicker basket attached to the bottom of the balloon, lay on its side. At Shooter’s nod, a crew member aimed a cylinder bolted to the top of the basket frame at the mouth of balloon and fired a jet of flame into the interior, making Lydia start.

While Shooter ran through a whole list of instructions, Lydia eyed the great cloud of fabric that had begun rising up above their heads, fed by fiery bursts of flame that roared like the breath of a dragon. If Lydia had a problem with boats, she had an even bigger one with heights. She didn’t mind flying in great big airplanes that closed you in completely and served drinks. She could take an elevator to the eightieth floor, no problem.
